Want To Bet?

Golfsmith does, the nation wide golf and tennis retailer is promising to refund consumers the amount of money they pay for a TaylorMade driver if Spain's Sergio Garcia wins The Masters next month. Here is the catch, you must purchase one of three top of the line Taylor Made drivers, Garcia's major sponsor, by a certain date.

Did I mention that the drivers cost between $300 and $400? If Golfsmith does have to pay it would cost them a tune of $1,000,000 for every 3000 drivers sold, needless to say Golfsmith has taken out an insurance policy just in case he wins.

It is a fairly safe bet for Golfsmith however, Sergio is 0 - 41 lifetime in majors and usually performs the worst in The Masters. TaylorMade has no connection with this except sponsoring Sergio and any buzz that is created through this promotion.

Should TaylorMade be happy with this promotion? TaylorMade prides itself on being the number one driver in golf and if Sergio does not win does that tarnish the brand? Soon they might be able to say they are the number one driver in golf who never wins. How could TaylorMade make this a positive brand building experience?

I think it is good for TaylorMade because it is very unlikey that Garcia will win. So they will make millions off people that do the deal. But if he does win TaylorMade will probably go out of buisness. Overall it is a good thing for them.

Great Idea. Considering the golfer is not that great! I think it will work! The company probaly will sell alot more high end drives and chances are this guy will not win the Masters... 0-41??? comon'

That is not a good idea because they are using a bad golfer and everyone knows that he wounld'nt win. This wil tarnish their brand by showing it does not matter who uses their products that it matters how you use the product. One set of clubs are no diffrent from another set of clubs. It depends how you swing it. They aren't taking a risk on money but taking a risk on brand loyalty or brand reognition.

I think this is a good idea for Golfsmith because it will be an increase in sales for them and, odds are, Sergio wouldn't win the Masters (even though it's over). Taylor Made's are expensive, high end clubs and this is a great way to maybe get a person that's on the fence about buying one to actually purchase it.

I think this is a good sales promotion from Golfsmith. This will increase their sales and chances are he won't win so they will not have to refund customers. This won't tarnish Taylor Made's brand because Taylor Made has already established itself as a high end golf manufacturer.

I think this was a good idea because if people did go and buy the drivers they will make lots of money and if there are people that want a high end driver they will buy the TaylorMade drivers becasue they will have a chance to get a refund. Also Sergio is no Tiger Woods and there always seems to be a guy that is not known very well that wins. Even though Sergio didnt win it didnt tarnish their brand because it is not the clubs it is the players fault that he lost.
